Sore Tongue: Possible Explanations And Solutions

By Liam Snow A common cause of having a sore tongue is simply rubbing: if the tip of the tongue is the most badly affected area, this can be a further indication that the tongue is rubbing against teeth. If the teeth are irregular and/ or have plaque located at the back of them, this increases the likelihood that friction will cause trauma to the tongue, and result in soreness. Other reasons that can cause people to rub their tongue against their teeth can be: Anxiety. Someone who is anxious may even be biting their tongue, causing further problems. This could be happening whilst asleep. Grinding teeth while asleep is also a common trait amongst anxious people. Kissing. Passionate embraces can result in rubbing against someone else’s teeth! Tongue studs. These can cause irritation, inflammation and soreness to the tongue. Poorly fitted dentures, which can also cause oral thrush infections. Tips for dealing with a sore tongue Check your tongue in the mirror for ulcers. Ulcers affect a significant number of people, and are often a sign of being run down. If you find that you are experiencing ulcers regularly, you should consult your doctor. Drink lots of water. The tongue is a good indicator of various problems in our bodies, and one of the most common is simply lack of water. Try to limit the amount of caffeine and alcohol you consume, at least until you are properly rehydrated again. Check you are taking essential vitamins and minerals. Ideally, these should naturally be present in our diets, but this is not always the case these days. It may be worth investing in some regular supplements. If the pain is localised to one specific area, take some simple remedies or pain killers. If pain persists, see your doctor. If the soreness is all over your tongue, seek medical advice sooner. Your tongue may be inflammed, or you may be suffering from glossitis. You may need to be tested for allergies or vitamin deficiencies. Embark on a rigorous oral hygiene routine, to include regular brushing of both teeth and tongue, and use of a reputable mouthwash. If your tongue problems continue to persist, seek medical advice. Although it may seem a fairly trivial problem, the tongue is a reliable gauge of other problems in the body, and should not be ignored. Create a Great Water Garden

By Jeanette Joy Fisher Among the latest new trends in gardening is the water garden, which can combine elements such as waterfalls, ponds, and fountains, often enhanced by intricate rockwork, elaborate lighting, specialized plants, and exotic fish. There are water gardens to fit every budget, as well. All you need is something that will hold water to use as your garden’s centerpiece. The placement of your water garden is your most important decision. You’ll want to choose a spot that gets as much sunlight as possible, generally away from trees or bushes that shed their leaves, because most plants and fish require a fair amount of sunlight to thrive, and deciduous trees and shrubs can make keeping your water element a chore in the fall. You’re only limited by your budget, the size of your space, and your imagination, but always bear in mind that your water garden will require a certain amount of maintenance, which you’ll have to do if you want your garden to continue to look great. If you incorporate fish into your garden scheme, they’ll also need to be fed as part of your routine maintenance program. If you use aquatic plants in your water garden, only cover about half the surface of the water. It will allow you to see your ornamental fish underneath. You may also want to plant flowers around the edge of your pond, and there are some plants that will actually add oxygen to the water, which is important, especially if you have fish in your pond. Fish can help keep the pond clean by eating insects. Algae is one of the primary problems encountered by water gardeners, and it’s often brought about by overfertilizing water plants or feeding fish too much or too often. For many years, people in England have used barley straw to help reduce the amount of string and filament type algae, but it may not work in every situation. If you experience algae problems–and you probably will–pay close attention to the feeding regime of both your fish and your water plants. To keep your water oxygenated and fresh, you’ll need a pond pump and filter, which can also help reduce insect and algae problems. Water plants also remove nutrients from the water that could create pollution problems. Some good plants include water hyacinths, water violets, and water crowfoot, if you bear in mind that they tend to reproduce vigorously and can quickly take over a pond. Like all gardens, water gardens require a certain amount of care, but the results can give you years of pleasure. Copyright 2006 Jeanette J. History in California is a Painful Subject

By Chhavi Sachdev The past can be painful, but in California, it can be rewritten. At issue is what sixth graders will learn about Hinduism in their ancient history textbooks. Claiming that eight social studies/history textbooks under review by the California Board of Education misrepresent Hinduism, two Hindu groups have approached the board with edits during its public review process last year. The textbooks are inaccurate and demeaning said Janeshwari Devi, director of programs at the Vedic Foundation, which she described as a Hindu educational group with no political affiliations. She pointed to specific references in the history textbooks proposed for 6th-graders, that describe Hinduisms voluntary class system, the varna system of social structure, with the discrimination associated with casteism. (See Whats at stake for a look at controversial passages.) As per state law, the textbooks slated for inclusion in the state curriculum in 2006 can be reviewed by the board of education before adoption. The board is similarly bound to invite public opinion. In October, armed with several proposed edits and thousands of signatures gathered online, the Vedic Foundation and the Hindu Educational Foundation challenged the eight history textbooks being evaluated. Hinduism and its origins are, on the whole, not portrayed inaccurately, but there are quite a number of individual mistakes, infelicities and insensitivities, which have been recognized and addressed by all committees involved, said Michael Witzel, the Wales Professor of Sanskrit at Harvard University. The errors in the textbooks perpetuate ignorance and put forth a negative stereotype, said the Vedic Foundations Janeshwari Devi. Hindu children in predominantly white schools are teased because of mistakes in current textbooks, according to the two Hindu foundations and their parent backers. Ancient Hinduism is presented as a pagan, pantheistic religion according to the plaintiffs. For instance, said Devi, references to the treatment of the untouchable caste by Brahmins is a misrepresentation of the ancient past. Similarly, ancient Hinduism did not discriminate against women. Modern social ills have no place in these books, she said. The depiction of Hindus, Hinduism and India is Eurocentric and wrong, according to the objectors. (See sidebar and external links for examples.) Some parents testified before the board that their children came home from school and said they did not want to be Hindus any more. One parent who said he is worried about the textbooks that are being proposed is Vishal Agarwal. Father of a first grader, Agarwal is actively following the events leading up to the boards decision. The current textbooks in use are by the same publishers and have practically the same verbiage [as the current books]. We cannot change the past, but at least I am trying to ensure that my son does not read these new textbooks that will be inflicted on millions of public school children, he said. The groups involvement has some parents up in arms, however. Most agree that the textbooks could stand some correction where basic facts are wrong, but a strident faction has said that the two foundations do not speak for moderate Hindus. Just as Christian fundamentalist supporters of creationism or intelligent design do not represent all Christians views on evolution, so Hindu extremists and their affiliates do not represent all Hindus views, said Mira Kamdar, a senior fellow at the World Policy Institute a think tank at the New School, N.Y. In November, three days before the state board passed the proposed edits, they received a counter petition signed by 50 American and international scholars from Witzel, who is also the editor of the Harvard University Press Harvard Oriental Series. The real issue at stake is the correct depiction of ancient history, according to the current state of the art, said Witzel. The two foundations involved have proposed edits that would rewrite Indian history and Hinduism according to their narrow sectarian and nationalistic bias, which is not allowed by California standards for textbooks. Acknowledging at the Nov. 9 meeting that the issues were very complicated, Ruth E. Green, president of the California Board of Education, said they were poised to accept 499 out of the 600 plus proposed edits. Sue Stickel, deputy superintendent of the curriculum and instruction branch of the Sacramento County Office of Education, said that the publishers of the textbook should include supplementary materials. However, because of Witzel and his colleagues concerns, the board halted its review. In January, the board invited Witzel and Shiva Bajpai of California State University, Northridge, a Hindu scholar supported by the Vedic Foundation, for a closed-session meeting. The board will review the edits and release a final report in March. In the meantime, however, Hindu children are not at risk from current textbooks, according to Rebecca Bigler, a psychology professor at the University of Texas at Austin, and leading researcher of social cognition in children as well as the development of racial stereotyping. By learning the facts, even if they are disconcerting ones about casteism or misogyny, children are not going to lose either their self-esteem or their identity, she said. In a recent study of elementary school children who were told about slavery for the first time, Biglers team saw some negative emotions. But, she is quick to point out that, The levels of anger and guilt were elevated, but they were still relatively low. Instead, learning the past and putting it in perspective makes kids more empathetic with victims and concerned about remediation, Bigler said. Some of the white children said they felt guilt and some of the black children said they felt anger, but its all in the approach. If we present facts so they know that every group has oppressed another group in history, the bigger lesson is about treating everyone with respect. Peer approval is a key feature of growing up in any country, said Dr. Jay Pasricha, a professor of medicine at the University of Texas, Galveston Island. It is hard enough to adjust to spoken or unspoken biases against their color or their very names. Such biases get official blessing and reinforcement when negative stereotypes are present in textbooks the very source that students take to be authoritative on the subject. This can result in our kids growing up either schizophrenic about themselves, or, worse still complete rejection of their culture. In a broader sense this applies to Indian-American society as a whole and serves to perpetuate intolerance based on race and religion, said Pasricha, calling for an impartial and balanced account based on the consensus of experts. Ten Easy Steps to Great Kids Party Pictures

By Patricia Jensen Kids parties and pictures go together like cake and ice cream. If you’re the designated shutterbug for a kids party, be sure you’re up to the task. A quick study of these valuable picture-taking tips shows you how to become a first rate kid party photographer. 1. PREPARE If you’re going digital, make sure your memory stick has enough space to accommodate the pictures you intend to take. Delete or download as necessary. Check and charge the battery too. If you’re using film, be sure you have more than enough so you don’t have to run out to the store in the middle of the action. Check and replace batteries if necessary. If your camera requires it, set it to match the ISO on the film. 2. TELL THE STORY OF THE EVENT Approach your next kids party as if it were an adventure which you are going to record for posterity from beginning to end. This will mean capturing the significant high points of the party such as the guests arriving, playing party games, opening presents, and of course the cake and ice cream “Happy Birthday to You” part. When you download your pictures to share with relatives and friends, organize them in chronological order to tell the complete party story. This is just as easy to do if you scrapbook your party showing just how the day evolved from start to finish. 3. CANDIDS OVER “CHEESE” Candids are simply more fun than posed pictures. Scope out party guests doing cute, interesting or outrageous things. Look for different expressions on their faces, capture them with a bow on their head or trying to pop a balloon with their bottom (a popular kids party game!) Those spontaneous moments are a photographer’s dream! Candids give you many more opportunities for those silly snapshots that put a smile on people’s faces. 4. KEEP IT AT EYE LEVEL For a more intimate and involved-in-the-moment picture, get down to the level of your subjects. Make sure your lens is at the same height as the children’s eyes. 5. ZOOM IN This is the number one mistake most amateur photographers make when snapping pictures. Too much headroom, too much background, and not enough of your subject make for boring images. Pictures are so much more engaging when you can actually see who’s in them! Make a conscious effort to get up close and personal before you click the shutter. 6. BACKGROUND AND COMPOSITION How you position and frame your subject adds to the appeal of the picture. To do this successfully you must be aware of the “bigger picture” in the viewfinder. First, make sure there are no trees or poles growing out of kids heads. No decapitations either, please. By taking a breath and holding it, you are better able to hold the camera steady while pressing on the shutter. This prevents the camera from moving downward and cutting off your subjects’ heads. Make your picture more dynamic and balanced by utilizing the “rule of thirds”. Mentally divide your picture into a 9 box tic-tac-toe grid. Now align your vertical subject 1/3 of the way over from the left or right. Then align your horizonal matter 1/3 of the way from the top or bottom. Practice a bit on this before the party to see how different subject placements effect the resulting photo. 7. BE QUICK Kids are usually on the move, especially when the sugar from the cake and ice cream kick in. Be prepared to capture the moment quickly. Waiting too long to get the shot will ruin a good candid and can even make antsy kids run when they see you coming! 8. ONE POSE FOR POSTERITY Take one group shot of the party child and guests for your scrapbook. This is also a wonderful little remembrance to send along with thank-you notes. To make it more interesting, pose kids with costumes or props which relate to the party theme. For example, guests at a pirate theme party can pose with their bandannas and eyepatches, looking like fierce buccaneers. Guests at a princess party could pose in their pretty dress-up clothes. Guests at a construction party can pose with their trucks in the sandbox. 9. DON’T LEAVE IT IN THE CAMERA Due to busy lifestyles, the tendency to leave cherished photos in the digital camera for weeks or months is great. Don’t wait until your important pictures are accidentally deleted or lost. Download them to your computer as soon as possible after the event. Similarly, make an effort to finish the film in your still camera and develop the pictures right away. 10. FILE OR SCRAPBOOK This is an often neglected step in the picture-taking process, but it’s important to have a safe method of filing and storing your pictures. There are many software programs available to help you sort and store digital pictures on your hard drive. They usually have a free trial period to see if you like working with the program. Non-digital pictures can be scanned onto your computer, placed in a scrapbook, or stored in special photo storage boxes. When all is said and done, you’ll have captured the special moments of joy and excitement at your child’s birthday party or other special occasion. A truly memorable collection that will entertain and make you smile for years to come. Copyright 2005 Kids Party Paradise All Rights Reserved Patricia B. Get a Prenuptial Agreement before Your Next Marriage

By Jeffrey Broobin While signing a prenuptial agreement can be one of the all-time romantic turnoffs, for people heading into their second marriage, a prenuptial agreement can give the trade-off of a better relationship through the security of financial and life planning. A prenuptial agreement is a legal contract between two people about to marry, specifying how assets will be distributed in the event of divorce or death. A prenuptial agreement is a good idea, even if you arent rich or own a home. It saves future arguments and can even save you money. A prenuptial agreement requires that each partner prepare an inventory of assets owned before the marriage, and it allows you to establish your separate priorities about those assets. Even if you do nothing more than that in your prenuptial agreement, this gives children from a previous marriage a chance to have half of that property and establish what belonged to Mom or Dad before the second marriage, and it establishes what you’re taking with you should you leave the marriage.” Statistically, second or third marriages are more likely to result in divorce than first-time unions. Because of this, a prenuptial agreement is an especially wise idea. A prenup is important if one of you is wealthier than the other. If you have assets such as a house, stock or retirement funds, you should have a prenup. A prenuptial agreement is essential if you own part or all of a business. A prenup can discuss your wishes if you may be receiving an inheritance. If you have relatives who need to be taken care of, such as disabled children or elderly parents, a prenuptial agreement is very important. If you expect to receive a big increase in income because of a growing business, a prenuptial agreement can address this issue. A prenuptial agreement is essential if you have children and/or grandchildren from a previous marriage. We recommend that each partner draw up a list of assets. Furthermore, for professional couples, prenuptial agreements can be the ultimate protection against all-too-common lawsuits or medical malpractice suits. You can’t predict all of your life events, and prenuptial agreements are a means of keeping your own assets safe in the event of any financial problems that your spouse may experience. Unsecured Loan: Absence of Collateral Will Not be a Problem for You

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=John_Carry]John Carry If you dont have any collateral (property) to keep for seeking a loan and you need a loan for any purpose, then an unsecured loan will always come to your mind. An unsecured personal loan could be sought for buying your dream car or for any vehicle. You can also go for a dream holiday and meet your expenses by securing an unsecured loan. For establishing the business of your own, you need to have a financial help. That financial help will be sought through an unsecured personal loan. On the other hand the huge expenses in a wedding ceremony can also be met with it. Now each and every expense in your wedding can be taken care of with an unsecured loan. If you are thinking of improving your home after some months, and finance is coming your way, then this problem could also be sort out through an unsecured loan. One of the most important problem what most of you face these days is to manage your debts? The solution to this problem you can get by seeking an unsecured loan for debt consolidation. This would be the best method to manage the debts smartly because here you are not securing any collateral. There are lenders in U.K. who approves the loans quickly and that also at competitive interest rates. Longer repayment terms are being offered by most of the lenders. The advantages associated with it are immense. The first thing is that there is no risk to your property. Secondly, less documentation work is involved and finally there is no valuation of your property. There are some disadvantages as well. The first one is that higher interest rates are charged because there is absence of collateral and risk is high to the lenders. Lenders avoid granting larger amount because of the high risk only. But any way it is a boon for you if you dont have any collateral to keep. So, if you think that you will be able to repay the installments in a shorter term and not willing to keep any collateral then an unsecured loan would be the best option for you. Private Practice Marketing: Getting on the Radio

By Jeff Herring For years I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to be on the radio two times a week. A local morning team on the number one morning show in town have me on each Monday and Wednesday for about 5 minutes each time. As a marriage and family therapist, it’s a fantastic way to market my private practice. Many people have asked me why in the world I drive over there twice a week. I usually respond by asking them do they know how much it would cost to buy 10 minutes of advertising on the radio each week? Advantages of appearing on the radio There are several advantages to being on the radio as a therapist: 1. It ups your expert-ability - When you are on the air, you are automatically seen as an expert. Listeners figure that the station would not have you on if you did not know what you were talking about. 2. You reach a larger audience - When you give a presentation to a group, you are limited to reaching only those in the room. When you are on the radio, you can reach an almost unlimited number of listeners. 3. Listeners quickly come to know, like and trust you - When you give good information that people use right away, listeners will come to know, like and trust you. And people like to do business with those they know, like and trust.
